Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
The Vision of Saint Francis of Paola

Circa 1670
Oil on canvas, 74 x 57.5 in. (19 x 15 cm.)
Getty Center, Los Angeles, California

This is typical of images of Francis looking up at flames in sky with the word charitas ("charity"), a vision which so far I have been unable to trace to any written text. The scene below the saint's right hand portrays his arrival in Sicily after sailing on his cloak across the Strait of Messina.
